Making jigsaw puzzles is an important part of a child’s
development but it is important to choose the right puzzle for the child. It
must not be too easy or too difficult or they will soon lose interest. The
picture must be of high quality and have interesting content appropriate to the
age group which will encourage them to make the puzzle time and time again. The
pieces must be easy to pick up, robust and a good fit.
Generally speaking the number of pieces for each age group are as follows
1 to 2 years – 2 to 5 pieces
2 to 3 years – 5 to 10 pieces
3 to 4 years – 10 to 36 pieces
4 to 5 years - 36 pieces and up
